Arts Education

P.17X was awarded a $15,000 grant from the Department of Education’s Arts and Special projects. This grant has allowed our students to attend two live performances, a dance company, Taylor II and the play, The Man Who Planted Trees, at Lincoln Center’s The Clark Studio Theater. It has also provided a six-session workshop for each alternate assessment class with two teaching artists from Lincoln Center to develop the students’ acting abilities and introduce them to puppetry, all while working on their reflection and discussion skills in relation to the performances.

Inside Broadway

Inside Broadway is a professional not-for-profit educational organization. Their mission is to introduce New York City public school students to the wonders and joys of the Broadway musical theatre. P17x@43 has participated in two of their unique programs:

Creating the Magic is a 75 minute educational theatre seminar that showcases performances from current Broadway shows and demonstrates the technical elements of the production. Creating the Magic illuminates The Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Theatre’s Strand V: Exploring Careers and Lifelong Learning. P17x@43 has seen several Broadway productions, among them Annie and Cinderella.

Build A Musical is Inside Broadway’s Residency Program that integrates the theatrical techniques of choreography, voice and diction, and singing with acting. This interactive residency program has also incorporated literacy, adapting books to create a featured musical, allowing students to dissect a script and create characters. Our past theatre productions have been The Pout Pout Fish and How The Bully Became A Friend.
